Ko Tao – About Koh Tao in Thailand

When you come to Ko Tao, you won’t want to leave. That makes it all the harder to believe that this beautiful island once was used as a jail where political prisoners were held in captivity. However, with its lovely beaches, warm water (it’s in the hot tub-like Gulf of Thailand), great food and fun for all ages, you could definitely speak about Koh Tao today as captivating. The atmosphere on the island is one of relaxation and contentment, in the gracious Thai tradition. Look for the best diving in the world here. If you don’t have much – or any – experience with diving, no problem … you can easily find lessons for your individual level on site. Your days on Koh Tao will be very full of fun on and in the water. Then in the evening Koh Tao’s nightlife is there for you to enjoy. How about a beach party? Or maybe you’d prefer a romantic meal by starlight?

Diving

Diving is the number one favorite activity among vacationers on Koh Tao. There are diving courses right on the island for all levels of ability, even if you are a complete beginner. Completing one of the courses can lead to a PADI or SSI diving certificate. With one of these internationally recognized certificates in hand, you will be permitted to dive anywhere in the world, but you are not likely to find any diving cooler than right here on Koh Tao. You’ll have a great time exploring the amazing undersea flora and fauna along the coast of the island. You may even catch a glimpse of a whale shark.

Accommodation

You will find the accommodation on Koh Tao to be quite pleasant, bearing in mind that the island is still fairly unspoiled. There is simply not the degree of touristic development that exists in many other areas of Thailand. However, you will find reasonable accommodation at a range of prices to suit your budget. You can opt for the comfort and convenience of a hotel, with amenities such as housekeeping and room service. These conveniences are especially important if you are traveling together with your young children. Or you may prefer the privacy and quaintness of a traditional bungalow.

Day trips and nightlife

If you are in the mood to do some exploring off island, there are a good number of short trips heading out from Koh Tao. The famous Full Moon Party on nearby Koh Phangan is a unique experience not to be missed by the adventurous in spirit. You do not need to stay overnight on Koh Phangan to join in the revelry, as there are special boats going back and forth. Another enjoyable possibility is taking one of the boat excursions to dive in the deeper waters off the coast of Koh Tao.

In terms of local nightlife, there are restaurants, night clubs and bars right on Koh Tao, if you prefer to do your partying closer to “home.” A delicious meal and a night cap or two will mark the perfect end to another magical day. Keep this delightful scene in mind when you think about Koh Tao.
