Hotels in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is one of Thailand’s major highlights. Nicknamed “the Rose of the North”, Chiang Mai is the fifth largest city in Thailand and is a hugely popular place among expats, backpackers and foodies. Set amid lush green surroundings and in between beautiful mountains, this city offers both an escape to nature, a superb food scene and a vibrant culture.

As such a popular tourist destination, it can come as no surprise that hotels in Chiang Mai are numerous. In fact, there are more than 250 hotels in the city you can choose from—that is in addiction to dozens and dozens of other accommodations such as guesthouses and bed and breakfasts. Generally speaking, all accommodations in Chiang Mai, with the exception of luxury resorts, are quite affordable. But even those luxury resorts aren’t all too expensive compared to similar resorts in other cities and countries around the world.

Hotels are as varied as they are plentiful. They range from your typical high rise buildings to luxurious resorts and, the latest new trend, stylish boutique hotels. These boutique hotels have popped up like mushrooms in the past decade and are usually located close to the old city center. It’s not that the other hotels in Chiang Mai aren’t good, but the new boutique hotels arguably are the best value for money. Usually on the small side—with some of them home to no more than eight rooms—these boutique hotels offer an as-authentic-as-possible stay in one of Thailand’s greatest cities. They generally have a quiet and lush garden and a swimming pool, and are beautifully decorated with antiques and typical Thai art and craftworks.

While boutique hotels are the best value for money, the best actual value is found at the luxury resorts. You will, however, also pay much more there. These resorts have all modern luxury amenities and sometimes even more, including a pool, spa, gym, massage parlor, restaurant and so on.
