Koh Mak - About Ko Mak in Thailand

It is impossible to describe Koh Mak and not use the words “tropical”, “paradise”, “beach getaway” and “island”. After all, a tropical paradise-like beach getaway island is exactly what it is. This small natural, undeveloped and quiet island in Trat province in Thailand is often overlooked by travelers to Thailand. That is a real shame because it is the absolutely ideal place for a relaxing beach vacation away from the crowds.

The island of Koh Mak is a sleepy and family-friendly destination; a place that has managed to keep huge development projects away and will remain an idyllic destination for quite some time. There are three small fishing villages on the island, home to a total of about 800 people.

Koh Mak lies almost 40 kilometers from the mainland, which makes getting there less convenient than getting to other tropical islands off the Thai coast. This ensures that the majority of travelers will keep choosing the easy way and be part of the huge crowds that overrun said other islands all-year round. In return for a bit more patience and effort, you can visit Koh Mak instead and enjoy its spectacular palm tree-lined beaches, relaxed atmosphere and unbelievably blue water.

Activities

Koh Mak is perfect for vacationers looking to relax, sunbathe and swim. In addition to the easily accessible main beaches, a bit more exploring will allow you to discover hidden beaches that you will have all to yourself.

Active things to do include cycling on Koh Mak’s bike trails, motor biking, hiking in the lush interior, scuba diving, snorkeling, sea kayaking, windsurfing, and going on boat trips. At low tide, it is possible to walk to a small nearby island.

Additional things to do are enjoying a traditional Thai massage, relaxing in a hammock between palm trees, enjoying superb and fresh seafood in the local restaurants, and visiting the island’s three rubber plantations.

Accommodation

Koh Mak may be relatively undeveloped, but there are some 30 small resorts on the island. Many of them are budget accommodations and are intimate, cozy and authentic places to stay. Some resorts have their section of private beach. If you’re visiting in the high season, make sure to book ahead—the resorts fill up quickly that time of year.
