One of the best places to go diving in Thailand is Koh Tao, and diving is the island’s main attraction. There are plenty of dive schools and dive resorts, as well as dive shops and dive tours. If you want to learn how to dive, Koh Tao is a good option. Diving here is easy and fun, because the water is warm and the currents are mild. Koh Tao is a great place to go diving year round, with the exception of November. The average underwater visibility is fifteen to twenty meters, although the visibility can sometimes exceed forty meters. Diving is possible off of all of Koh Tao’s shores. There are many other dive spots near Koh Tao, including Chumphon Pinnacles, Southwest Pinnacles, Green Rock, Japanese Gardens, the shipwreck HTMS Sattakut, Hin Pee Wee, Shark Island, Lighthouse Bay, and more.

Koh Tao’s underwater wonders can also be seen by snorkeling. Shark Bay is a popular snorkeling site. Do not be scared off by its name, there are sharks, but only small black-tip reef sharks. Snorkelers and divers can expect to see spectacular tropical wonders. The seas around the island are incredibly bio diverse, and are home to coral reefs. If that’s not enough, there are also turtles, stingrays, barracudas, a plethora of tropical fish, and reef sharks. Whale sharks make rare appearances.

For an incredible diving experience, consider heading out to Koh Taom Sail Rock. Sail Rock is located between Koh Tao and the neighboring island of Koh Phangan. This is an immensely popular dive location, perhaps the best in the entire Gulf of Thailand. As one would expect from the name, Sail Rock is a large rock jutting up from the seas. Many different types of beautiful and exotic marine life call Sail Rock their home. For example, divers can expect to see coral reefs and lots of tropical fish, along with spectacular seascapes. Whale sharks might wander through, depending on the season. Make sure not to miss the legendary “Chimney” Swim Through. The maximum diving depth is forty meters, and the area is suitable for divers of all skill levels.
