Koh Phangan is a great place for those interested in tropical scuba diving, whether they are raw rookies or experienced pros. The classes are inexpensive, the diving groups are small, and the underwater scenery is exquisite. The beautiful ocean around Koh Phangan is home to the fascinating, diverse coral reefs, as well as a variety of fish and other marine life. There are several diving sites near Koh Pagan’s western shore, Haad Salad, Haad Yao, Haad Chao Phao, and Koh Tae Nai. These beaches share a single long, hard coral reef, which extends northwards to Koh Ma (also a dive site, of course). These beach diving sites are perfect for beginners, and for anyone not excited by the prospect of venturing away from Koh Phangan. The maximum dive depth at these beaches is 19 meters.

Dive trips from boat

For those who are interested, there are diving sites further out from the island, including the immensely popular Koh Taom Sail Rock. One of the advantages of visiting Koh Phangan is that it is the island closest to Sail Rock. There are regular day tours to Sail Rock, which is likely the most famous dive site in the entire Gulf of Thailand. Sail Rock is located between Koh Phangan and the neighboring island of Koh Tao. True to its name, it is a large rock rising up from the ocean. This rock creates the opportunity for wall diving, along with its legendary “Chimney” swim through. The waters around Sail Rock cover a huge range of marine life, coral reefs, and spectacular rock formations. You might even be lucky enough to spot a whale shark. The underwater wonders are accessible to divers of all skill levels. The maximum depth is 40 meters.

Koh Phangan has many dive schools. Their levels of certification differ. It is advisable to check that a dive school is registered with the Tourism authority of Thailand before attending their classes. This should ensure a higher standard of safety and customer service. Scuba diving training is available on all levels, from a basic introduction to diving up to and including certification as a diving instructor.
