Koh Phangan is one of Thailand’s most visited islands. Located in southern Thailand, between other popular islands such as Koh Samui and Koh Tao, Koh Phangan is a true tropical paradise, home to lush rainforests, stunning beaches and amazing coral reefs. The one thing it is most famous for, however, is the monthly Full Moon Parties. These parties take place on Haad Rin Beach once every month and last the entire night. They are truly massive parties, drawing in crowds as large as 30,000. After the party, the beach and island empties again, prices drop and quietness returns. If you’re not a party-goer, the best time to visit is right after a Full Moon Party.
As the Full Moon Parties attract mostly young budget travelers, Koh Phangan is home to countless backpacker accommodations such as hostels, beach huts and guesthouses. That being said; Koh Phangan is slowly moving away from its backpacker-related origins and is starting to focus more on families and package vacationers. This, of course, result in more and better hotels and resorts.
When looking at accommodation in Koh Phangan it may be good to know that budget beach huts are sometimes referred to as resorts, too. There are plenty of resorts and hotels that are actually worth their name as well, though. Most of them are located close to the pier where you arrive—if there not located nearby, they usually offer a taxi or boat service to get you to your accommodation. There are many great beach areas to stay, all of them home to at least some fine hotels.
The thing to remember is that if you are visiting at or around a Full Moon Party, you should definitely book ahead. Places are fully booked almost without exception. These are also the times when prices are at their highest. Visiting right after a Full Moon Party or in the (relatively) low season months of July and August is a good idea if you’re after a quiet island holiday.
